QuikWater in the Concrete Industry

PhotoIt's out with yesterday's boilers and in with QuikWater innovation. For Rainbow Concrete, QuikWater heater technology is the foundation of year-round business success.

Stan Cypert, Rainbow Concrete's Production Manager, oversees the company's batch load and concrete delivery operations. With more than 31 years of industry experience, he knows too well the impact hot water makes on the success – and expanded operational season – of a concrete business.

For years Rainbow depended on boiler systems to produce the volumes of hot water needed to make concrete during Oklahoma's coldest months – October through March. But the boilers simply couldn't provide consistent hot water temperatures. Then the company discovered QuikWater direct-contact water heating systems. "QuikWater systems are much more efficient than a boiler," Stan says. "We get a more consistent temperature, the heater is simple to operate and maintain, the technology is smart, and QuikWater's service and support has been extremely responsive."

And the best part about QuikWater direct-contact water heating systems? "We never run out of hot water," Stan says.

QuikWater in the Food Processing Industry

The Problem

photoWhen you're one of the world's leading consumer and commercial food producers, hot water plays a vital role in both the preparation process and sanitation. "This particular plant was running out of hot water for sanitation," says Tammy Collins, QuikWater Sales Manager. "They wanted to eliminate their shell and tube heat exchangers that generated hot water at only 65% energy efficiency, and then redirect the steam to areas of the production process that required steam use." But the plant was also highly concerned about sanitation. After a day of production, all equipment must be disassembled and cleaned, along with the floors and all areas of the plant. This must be completed in a certain time to ensure the next production shift is ready to work without delay. Late production starts are costly in time and production, so generating hot water fast at consistent temperatures and volumes needed for cleaning and cooking is essential to the overall business.

The Solution

QuikWater went right to work to develop a long-term solution for this food production plant. The company recommended its Flagship model 8000 direct-contact hot water heating system, which supplies 200 gallons per minute of 140° water heated from 60° incoming water. "Because this plant also uses the hot water to fill their kettles to cook noodles, they now use less steam to maintain the correct temperature," Tammy says. "They no longer needed to use the steam energy to take the water from 60° to 140°." QuikWater also customized a 900-gallon storage tank and constructed stairs for the system platform. The result? "The QuikWater Flagship produces hot water on demand in the volumes this plant needs every shift to cook and sanitize while increasing their energy efficiency into the upper 90s percentile," Tammy says. "Reliability is key for this plant and QuikWater systems deliver." It's not surprising then when the plant expanded its capacity a few years later, they came back to QuikWater for a second direct-contact hot water heating system.

QuikWater in the Commercial Laundry Industry

photoA lot of companies can lay claim to serving big names in industry but we think the smaller guys deserve just as much attention to quality and service. That's why when John Martin, president of Columbus, Ohio's Martin Carpet Cleaning, called QuikWater to learn more about our direct-contact hot water heating systems, we were happy to oblige. We were also pleased to hear that John was referred to us by another happy QuikWater customer who owns a business similar to his.

The Problem

Martin Carpet Cleaning is a small company with a long, rich history in Columbus. In addition to cleaning wall-to-wall carpeting, furniture and hard surfaces on customer premises, it also provides complete rug washing services. "We are a customer and quality-oriented company that prides itself on delivering personal and responsive quality services," John says. For years, Martin Carpet Cleaning relied on a 1,750,000 Btu boiler to produce the hot water required to clean heavily soiled items. But over time the boiler couldn't deliver water that was consistently hot in the quantities the company needed. "In our business, hot water and the right temperature of that water for a particular application is paramount," John says. In addition, the boiler sent a lot of heat up the flue that was totally wasted. "With the uncertainty of natural gas costs, it was very important to replace our old unit with something that would maximize the Btus of the gas being used," John says.

The Solution

QuikWater worked closely with Martin Carpet Cleaning to recommend the direct-contact hot water heating system that met every criteria – hot water at consistent temperatures; high energy efficiency; fast water delivery time; low maintenance; and exceptional after-the-sale service. A QuikWater Flagship model 1750 was soon installed with the capability to produce 43 gallons of 130° water per minute. Most of the wash is done at 115° hot water produced directly from the QuikWater system. "Now we rely on our Quikwater system to feed our commercial heater with preheated water at 115° to 120° so the commercial heater can increase the temperature to 160° without straining," John says. So, how would he rate his QuikWater system overall? "In a word, excellent," John says. "Where there's a call for hot water, it's there in volumes and saves time in that we can fill a washer or a tank in the fraction of time it used to take."

QuikWater in the Canning and Bottling Industry

The Problem

photoAs one of the world's most recognized brands of carbonated soft drinks, juices and juice drinks, ready-to-drink teas and coffee drinks, isotonic sports drinks, bottled water and enhanced waters, this canning and bottling company relies on hot water to ensure the integrity of their products. "Hot water is integral to the overall production process as well as clean up during non-production hours," says Tammy Collins, QuikWater Sales Manager. "When cans or bottles have been filled with product, the liquid is very cold. Before packaging them into cardboard containers, the temperature of the product must be raised to ambient temperature so the cans or bottles don't sweat during transportation. If they do, the cartons become wet and then mold." This bottling plant depended on three boilers to produce the hot water required for the process, but the boilers weren't supplying the right temperature of water to the bottle warmer. This not only compromised the product but also decreased overall production with delays and downtime.

The Solution

Given the complexity of the canning and bottling process, QuikWater worked closely with this plant to design a packaged system that could accommodate the low temperature rise and high flow rate required. A QuikWater Flagship model 5000 was installed along with the pumps needed to take the water from the warmer back to the QuikWater system for reheating. Special controls and valves were used to regulate the flow rates and temperature of the water in the bottle/can warmer. "We integrated these items into a complete package with all the necessary programming and controls to allow this customer to set the QuikWater in place, hook it up to the bottle/can warmer, and be up and running," says Tammy. "We also trained their maintenance people in the overall operation, troubleshooting and preventative maintenance that allows them to be self-reliant." As a result of replacing three boilers with one QuikWater system, this bottling plant now maintains more accurate temperature control in the can/bottle warmer and has also increased production. With less downtime and added fuel savings, the QuikWater direct-contact hot water heating system has proved to be the optimal solution for energy efficient hot water on demand.
